A vivid showcase of Rwandan elegance, this Red Bourbon opens with notes of ripe blood orange and golden raisin. As it cools, delicate florals and red plum emerge, wrapped in a silky texture. The cup is clean and vibrant, with a tea-like structure and a finish that lingers with soft spice and cane sugar sweetness.

BEHIND PRODUCTION
Red Bourbon is one of the most cherished coffee varieties cultivated in Rwanda, prized for its sweet, complex profile and exceptional cup clarity. Introduced to Rwanda during the early 20th century, Red Bourbon adapted beautifully to the country’s high elevations, volcanic soil, and temperate climate.

Today, it thrives in regions like Gakenke and Nyamasheke, where altitudes often exceed 1.800 meters. The variety is known for its round body, juicy acidity, and notes ranging from stone fruit to floral tea. In Rwanda, Red Bourbon is almost exclusively handpicked and meticulously processed—often fully washed—preserving its elegant structure and refined sweetness.
LOCATION
Ruli is a remote hillside sector in Rwanda’s Northern Province, located within the Gakenke District and served by the Nyabihu watershed. Perched at altitudes of 1,800 to 2,000 meters, the area is known for its rugged terrain, morning mists, and cool temperatures that extend cherry ripening and concentrate sweetness. This microregion forms part of the larger Rwandan coffee belt, where high elevations, mineral-rich volcanic soils, and dense biodiversity yield coffees with remarkable clarity and layered complexity.

The Ruli Washing Station—first established in the early 2000s—is central to the community, processing harvests from hundreds of smallholder farmers, most of whom cultivate less than half a hectare each. These farmers handpick ripe cherries and deliver them on foot or by bicycle to the station, where traditional fully-washed methods are applied with great care.

More broadly, Rwanda’s specialty coffee identity has flourished since the early 2000s, following agricultural revitalization and quality-driven investment. Today, regions like Gakenke, Nyamasheke, and Nyamagabe stand out for producing coffees that are structured, floral, and fruit-forward—qualities embodied in this expressive Ruli 1904 Red Bourbon lot.

Rwanda Ruli 1904 arrived to our roastery via EL CAFÉ, a company established in 2000 by Vasileios G. Anastasopoulos that is solely concerned in the coffee producing countries with discovering new coffee varieties on special farms.

Since then they supplie most of the largest coffee producing companies in Greece, by remaining as a dedicated green coffee import and trading company.
